NSW: Youth questioned over detonation of chemical explosive

SYDNEY, Aug 9 AAP - A 16-year-old boy was being questioned this morning over the detonation
of a chemical explosive at a Newcastle shopping mall, police said.

The device exploded inside a rubbish bin on Cowper Street outside Wallsend Plaza, in the
city's west, around 2.30pm (AEST) yesterday.

Despite there being a large number of shoppers in the area, only a few were affected and
they were treated briefly by ambulance officers at the scene after inhaling acidic fumes.

"I think it was just lucky the fallout seemed to shoot up rather than outward," a police
spokesman said.

It is believed those responsible accessed information on bomb making from the Internet.

The spokesman said detectives were continuing to speak to one boy in custody over the
incident, although it was possible others were involved.
