Fed: Scott welcomes end of Diggers plan for aths team
Veterans Affairs Minister BRUCE SCOTT says the decision by Athletics Australia to withdraw
the nickname Diggers for the Australian athletics team is positive and sensible.
Athletics Australia revoked its decision to use the name after widespread resistance
to identifying a sporting team with an iconic name from Australia's military history.
Mr SCOTT says in a statement the decision was influenced by the overwhelming nationwide
public support for the RSL's stand that Athletics Australia should consider using a word
other than Diggers.
